Registration Information
REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR ENGLISH MAJORS
Spring 2008
The registration period for the Spring 2008 term begins on Monday, November 12. Check Albert for your date and time. All English majors have been pre-cleared for TorchTone and online registration via Albert. Downloadable course listings and descriptions for Spring 2008 will be available online at http://english.fas.nyu.edu/object/english.ug.courseinformation.html. Hard copies also are available in the English Department (19 University Place, Fifth Floor).
- All English majors who have English listed as their first major have been assigned a departmental advisor from among the full-time faculty. Your advisor’s name should appear on your Albert record. Please contact Shanna Williams (shanna.williams@nyu.edu) if no advisor is listed.
- All English majors are pre-cleared to register: you do not need to see your advisor to choose classes via Torchtone (phone) or online except in cases where English is listed as your second major. When this is the case, you must be cleared in your first major department.
- The English department does encourage all its majors to see their advisors to discuss the major program. You should contact your advisor via e-mail or visit during office hours. Before seeing your advisor, you should download or pick up the Major Worksheet that applies to you (available online and in the department), fill it out, and bring it to your advising meeting. If English is listed as your second major, your advisor is the director of undergraduate studies (DUGS), currently Professor Una Chaudhuri.
- All English department classes will have waiting lists, with the following exceptions: Junior and Senior Honors, internship and independent study. These classes have controlled enrollment, requiring an access code. If you wish to enroll in a class that is closed, you must join the waiting list. IF THERE ARE MORE THAN FIVE PEOPLE ON THE WAITLIST, YOU ARE BETTER OFF ENROLLING IN ANOTHER COURSE OR SECTION.
- Students who are interested in getting credit for internships should pick up or download an application form. Majors should have their advisors approve the statement of duties faxed in or brought in, by you, from your potential supervisor. The advisor will be responsible for assigning a grade of pass or fail at the end of the term based on a supervisor’s evaluation and a 900- to 1500-word report. Minors will apply to Professor Waterman under the same procedure.
