Prospective StudentsPh.D. Program:
All accepted Ph.D. students in English receive four or five years of funding through the MacCracken program. In 2009-2010 students will receive a $22,440 stipend for nine months, plus a full tuition scholarship, registration and services fees, and full coverage of NYU student health insurance for an individual under the comprehensive plan. The MacCracken fellowship includes at least two years of fellowship support and at least two years of teaching. The teaching assignments may be in English Department courses, MAP courses, or in the Expository Writing Program. In addition, the award includes a one-time $1,000 Dean's Supplementary Fellowship Grant that may be spent at the student's discretion. This grant is intended to provide support for start-up research and educational expenses such as books, academic supplies, and computer equipment.
M.A. Program:
M.A. students who receive external awards are encouraged to apply for the GraduateSchool’s Tuition Incentive Program (TIP). Students receiving external awards of $13,000 or more from recognized, academic sources of funding outside of the University can apply for matching tuition points up to the amount of their outside award. Students receiving external awards of less than $13,000 may apply for matching tuition points up to 50 percent of the amount of the external award. English Department Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I apply to the program? You can apply to the program by going to the GSAS Admissions and Application website http://gsas.nyu.edu/page/grad.admissionsapplication. You can apply online, download the application or request that an application be mailed to you. Please mail all application materials to the Graduate School of Arts and Science not the English Department.
What should my application Include? M.A. and Ph.D. applicants must both submit: A completed application, a statement of academic purpose, three letters of recommendation, a writing sample (10-12 pages in length), official transcripts, GRE General and English Lit Subject Exam Scores
Do you accept students in both the Fall and Spring semesters? No, we only admit students in the Fall semester.
Does your program have a minimum GPA or GRE requirement? There are no minimum GPA or GRE scores needed to apply. All aspects of the application are considered during the admissions review and strong emphasis is placed on the writing sample, personal statement and letters of recommendation.
Do I have to have an M.A. to apply to your doctoral program? No, an M.A. is not required for the PhD. Candidates without an M.A. earn the degree as they progress towards the Ph.D.
How many people apply to your Ph.D. program? Each year we receive approximately 500 applications. We generally enroll 10-12 Ph.D. students per year and 30-35 M.A. students.
What kind of writing sample or personal statement should I submit? The writing sample should be 10-12 pages in length and should be double-spaced. It is usually a critical piece that you consider your best work. The personal statement is usually 1-2 pages and can include descriptions of pieces of academic writing that really engaged you, what areas or types of research you would like to do in the future, what authors most interest you, etc.
What is the deadline for fellowships? Ph.D. students must submit application materials by December 18, 2009. All Ph.D. students who are admitted will receive a fellowship package. M.A. Students admitted to the terminal M.A. program do not receive funding from the department, but can apply for external financial aid.
If I am not admitted to the Ph.D. program, can I be considered for the M.A. program? Students may include a note in their application that indicates that they would like to be considered for the M.A. program if not admitted to the Ph.D. program.
If I am admitted to the M.A. program, will I automatically be admitted into the Ph.D. program once I complete my M.A.? Students accepted into the MA only program, may later apply to the Ph.D. program but they will be considered with all other external applicants.
If I have a Master's degree in English Literature, will all my credits transfer into the Ph.D. program? The department can transfer between 4 and 32 credits, but this is done in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies after a student is admitted.
What is the Institution code for GRE and TOEFL scores? The institution code is 2596.
When should I take the General and Subject GRE exams? The subject tests are usually administered in April, October, and November. The General GRE exams are now offered on various dates. Please check the ETS website (www.ets.org) for further information. All exams should be taken by November 8th to allow sufficient time for your scores to be sent. International students should check with ETS about exam as they may vary by country. Please remember to plan ahead.
When will admissions decisions be made? For the Ph.D. program, applications are reviewed beginning early January and most decisions will be mailed out by mid-February. M.A. students will usually be informed by mid-March.
Will I be notified if my application is complete or missing anything? If you have already submitted your application, you may check which application materials the Graduate School has received on your behalf by visiting the GSAS Supporting Materials Tracking System (SMTS) on their website http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/request/smts.html
Can I visit the department and campus? Can I email, talk to or meet with faculty and Graduate students? You may email them individually to ask questions or schedule appointments.
Do I need foreign language proficiency before applying? You should have foreign language proficiency before you graduate from the M.A. or Ph.D. programs. Previous language credit may be applied if the grades received were B or better and taken no more than two years before the first semester of enrollment in GSAS. You can also take the GSAS foreign language proficiency exam to waive the requirement.
